The couple moved to Pawleys Island from Jacksonville, Fla., in 1974 and started the 3-Way Exxon on Highway 17 at the South Causeway. In addition to his work at Duke and USC, Dr. Vernberg held leadership positions in many national organizations and on the editorial boards of academic journals.
